Welcome to the Grayling Fish Hatchery

We’re a non-profit educational facility where visitors learn about this historic site, the trout common in Michigan streams, the environmental concerns in our area, and the value of Michigan’s stream trout fisheries.

A little background...

Did you know that without the Grayling Fish Hatchery, Anglers of the Au Sable and Trout Unlimited might never have been founded?

Yep! The Grayling Fish Hatchery was once a prolific State of Michigan hatchery that kept the Au Sable in constant supply of trout…hatchery trout. A concerned citizenry, tired of catching the same stocked trout over and over again, advocated for a focus on wild trout…something the Au Sable is excellent at producing. Now thanks to “No Kill” regulations, the Au Sable is one of the best wild trout streams in the state, producing some of the highest trout densities in the country. And the Grayling Fish Hatchery stands as a bridge between the past and the present.

Our runs are filled with brook, brown and rainbow trout (including some big ones!) that guests may feed and even catch for dinner.  We also have a catch and release bluegill pond for kids to practice their fishing techniques.

What is the future of the Grayling Fish Hatchery?

The upper Au Sable is an interconnected fishery, with all the branches offering the trout free range between feeding areas, spawning areas, and cold water areas for summer refuge…except for the East Branch.  For years, the Hatchery has stood between the upper East Branch and the lower East Branch. Such barriers isolate the upstream population of trout. This is not a good thing, and we can fix it! Our first big project will be to reconnect the upper East Branch to the rest of the Au Sable, allowing fish migration.  We hope to have this reconnection complete no later than 2021.

We also intend to expand the historical offerings of the property through interactive tours of the facility.  This could mean fly-casting lessons, or time with historians or biologists. Stay tuned for these start in 2019!

Finally, the Grayling Fish Hatchery could one day become the spiritual home of the extinct Michigan grayling — once native to the Au Sable — where visitors could see the grayling in these historic raceways.  There’s no date, but we remain hopeful that one day this dream will come true.
